Writing

Writing

These are the guidelines our copywriting and content team use in order to deliver delightful and engaging content to our users, learn how.

In general always remember our values: first principles, critical thinking, self-driven, inclusivity, equality, openness, freedom.

What is our tone of voice?

The tone of voice is the way that we communicate with users and people around the globe, which helps to reflect and support our brand values, personality and vision.

Approachable and relatable

The web3 tone of voice is much less formal and strict compared to many web2 companies. The majority of our users will be web3, so we need to make sure we speak and resonate with them to encourage engagement.

Insightful, inquisitive, and philosophical, not lecturing

Socrates was a Greek philosopher thought to be the founder of Western philosophy and among the first moral philosophers of the ethical tradition of thought. We want to provide an authoritative voice that makes our users think deeply and question their thought processes.

Grounded in humanity and useful knowledge

Despite being proponents of the use of technology, we are anti-AI and want to encourage human interactions between different cultures, so our voice should recognise that. This will also help to encourage users to trust us in a space that needs reassurance

Usage guidelines

There are some important things to remember when communicating with our users.

Brand Consistency

All communications should align with the brand voice and core values, maintaining consistency across all platforms and mediums.

Authenticity

Content should be genuine and aim to build trust with the audience by being transparent and straightforward.

Engagement

Encourage user interaction by posing questions, seeking opinions, and creating content that is both informative and engaging.

Cultural Sensitivity

Be mindful of the diverse global audience and ensure that all content is respectful and inclusive of different cultures and perspectives.

Monitoring and Feedback

Regularly monitor audience engagement and feedback to continually refine and improve communication strategies.

Legal Compliance

Ensure all communication is in compliance with web3 and crypto regulations, respecting user privacy and platform integrity.

Communication Principles

  • Refer to this document

  • Focus on the educational, community, and knowledge-sharing aspects of the platform

  • Emphasise the rewards of participation as a way to gain knowledge and connect with others rather than a monetary incentive

  • Always remember our target audience and who you are communicating to

  • Ensure that all copies are written in British English

  • Ensure that the English is correct - if you're in doubt, please run it by a native English speaker first

  • Headers should ensure the first word is uppercase, and the rest of the sentence is lower case

  • Frequently ask questions, rather than making a statement. This is in line with our inquisitive tone of voice. For example, a section title could be 'What is our tone of voice?', rather than 'Tone of voice'

  • We encourage you to use contractions with apostrophes to make sentences sound more casual i.e. "we're" instead of "we are", and "don't" instead of "do not"

  • When writing numbers, we encourage you to use the Latin numerical system where appropriate, i.e. I, II, III, IV, V etc.

  • Do not ever compare Socrates to competitors, nor reference other companies or people's names

  • Ensure that the word 'Pen' is capitalised

  • Ensure you avoid mentioning any political topics or avoid Socrates taking a political stance on a topic
